Random Thoughts After a 2-12 NFL Week

I don't want to talk about my 2-12 week.  Enough of you have emailed me to make fun.  I get it.  2-12 is not good.

UCLA Basketball has me genuinely excited.  I've been at Pauley Pavilion for the two exhibition games and the CSUN and Pepperdine games.  When Ben Howland lets these guys run, the Bruins all of a sudden look like a legit Top-25 team.  No more of those 30 second possessions that end in missed 20-footers.  But when Howland tries to slow the game down, it's a re-run of last season.  The posts forget to flash in the zone.  The man offense shuts down after waiting 10 seconds to set up.  It's not fun.  Here's hoping Howland recognizes how much better the Bruins look with the up-tempo style.

Do you think Chauncey Billups dreams about taking bad shots?

The Lakers look scary good.  They can sleep through the regular season, get to 60 wins, and take the 3-peat by the horns when it counts.

I just heard Marv Albert say "Chauncey Billups with his first field goal."  7:30 remaining in the 3rd quarter if you were wondering.

Tom Brady looked like the Super Bowl MVP Brady.

I'll miss having a Raiders team over .500.  It was fun while it lasted.

John Wall is already a top-5 must see player in the NBA.

Boardwalk Empire is slowly taking the Sopranos place in my life as the Sunday night show I look forward to.  Not quite as good, but definitely solid.

I'm glad Margarito got what was coming to him.  I'm even more glad I didn't pay the PPV money to contribute to his purse.

Le'Ron McClain better hope that LB whose face he spat in isn't on the field when the teams play next year.

I've never had a bad thing to say about Seattle but after attending the Galaxy/Sounders playoff match at the Home Depot Center, I'm glad Seattle lost Kevin Durant.  What is wrong with these people.  They were chanting "Let him die!" at Galaxy players who went down.  Every third word during one of their chants was an f-bomb directed at the Galaxy fans which was about 20% children.  Quick!  Name a Seattle Sounder.  What's a Sounder anyway?

Sorry, mild heart attack.  I just saw Chauncey Billups make the extra pass.

And just as I type that he takes the next shot.  Yes, it was a brick.  Yes, there was a hand in his face.  Yes, there was someone wide open in the corner.

Has there been a more ridiculous Gold Glove winner than Derek Jeter?

I LOVE watching the Miami Heat lose.  Miami.  Where zero half-court offense identity happens.  Isn't Miami's roster situation a much better version of one of Isiah Thomas' Knicks squads?  No big man and a bunch of guys who need the ball to score.  Maybe they'll give Michael Olowokandi's agent a call.  I'm sure he'd be willing to make the flight out here from Tunisia or wherever he is.

I hope Cam Newton plays the season out, Auburn wins the BCS, and Cam wins the Heisman.  Then we can maybe have an adult conversation about the hypocrisy of the NCAA and the universities when the "scandal" really gets played out.

Cliff Lee is worth the money.  I don't care what he signs for.  He's worth it.

I really wish the San Francisco Giants had a more annoying team.  I hate the Giants but their individual players are quite likeable.  The Dodgers fan in me just punched me in the face.

Yay for this 15 year old kid.  Wait for the 1:22 mark if you haven't seen this:  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dwimc4cvUmQ).

Pauley Pavilion feels a little empty without Coach John Wooden there.  I've never thought of someone I had never met as a mentor until I came to know Coach Wooden through the television screen and his book.  I still miss seeing him.

Eli Manning is not a good QB.  He lost me my Survivor Pool last week.  What's more annoying is that he'll have a great game.  The Giants D-Line will be dominant and the Giants will upset Vick the Dog Killer & Co. in Philly.  Oh, I'm so sorry that I don't see the Dog Killer as a nice come back story.  Give me a break.  I will never root for Vick.  He is not a good human being and has committed deplorable crimes.

On a similar note, did you hear that Tiger Woods is rehabilitated and happy now.  It took Morgan Freeman 60 years in the Shawshank Redemption to rehabilitate.  Granted he murdered someone, but still.  That's about as genuine as Pete Carroll's innocence claim with everything 'SC.

Boise State had better be preparing its "we got screwed" statement.

Do the people deciding who moves on in Dancing With the Stars also determine the BCS standings?  If so, who is the BCS' Bristol Palin?

Make sure to watch Paul Williams/Sergio Martinez II on HBO Boxing this Saturday.  Their first fight will be the 2010 Fight of the Year.  The rematch should be a show to watch as well.

What's more of a story . . . 1)  European soccer player sleeps with hooker.  2)  College athlete cheats on test or takes money under the table.  3)  Homophobic Republican Congressman has affair with young boy.  4)  Sun rises and sets in same day.

Why are people obsessed with Britain's royal family?  Until Prince William pulls a sword out of a stone I will continue to be unimpressed.

I have never seen a coach vs. players situation quite like Minnesota's.  How do you not fire the coach there?  Even if it's not his fault, it's clear the players aren't going to show up for him let alone listen to him.

How does John Calipari continue to avoid trouble?  If he cheated a woman as much as he cheats the NCAA . . . no, that's not a Rick Pitino joke.

Good to see the L.A. Kings doing well again.

Great column by Howard Bryant of ESPN on Tony Dorsett's moronic use of the word "lynching" to describe the treatment of Cam Newton.

Will Oregon go for 2 on its first TD of the BCS Championship game?

Would anyone watch a Boise State vs. TCU BCS Championship game?  And that's why a playoff will not happen.

LeBron James' image needs more rehab than Lindsay Lohan.

And with that, here are the Week 11 Picks:

Jacksonville -1.5 vs. Cleveland
Oakland +7 at Pittsburgh
Cincinnati -5.5 vs. Buffalo
Dallas -6.5 vs. Detroit
Arizona +8 at Kansas City
