Random Thoughts On A Tuesday Morning
If you're an institution that likes to say how much you love our country's soldiers and veterans, then you have to recognize Veteran's Day as a holiday. You can't have it both ways. Yes, I'm talking to you Loyola Law School. My friend Ryan did a tour in Afghanistan and another in Iraq and has to go to class today instead of enjoying a well-deserved day off. Not right.
If Prop 8 had failed it would not have had an effect on anybody's life except for the people who should be entitled to the same rights as the rest of us. Now, because it passed, it's affecting all of our lives because it takes an extra half an hour to get anywhere in the city every other day for a protest.
It's been a week since the election. The stock market is still getting killed. GM might go under. AIG got another bailout making it $150 billion. Merrill's CEO said this reminds him of 1929. Note to everyone in 4 years: This was not Barack Obama's fault. This isn't going to be fixed in four years. Start buying gold and bonds.
For everyone fortunate enough to watch last night's Monday Night Football game, you finally got the answer to the age old question, "I wonder what a Raiders intra-squad scrimmage looks like." I only caught from the end of the third quarter on, but that was some of the sloppiest play, worst game calling, poor exhibition of execution I've ever seen. Someone needs to tell Mike Singletary that the "Andy Reid's Tips To Short Yardage Play Calling In The Fourth Quarter" is a book that he should burn. And does Arizona practice jumping offsides? I honestly was thinking about dedicating a whole column to how ridiculous and how exciting that game was last night but I figured that was piling on. Plus, a column about poor execution without the Raiders just doesn't feel right.
Mike Singletary makes me happy. This deserved its own little portion of today's Random Thoughts. He uses his hands to speak more than my entire Italian class in college combined.
I'm trying to think of how we can get Mike Holmgren, Andy Reid, and Romeo Crennel together with a group of walruses and then sneak a camera in there. Don't worry Craig Stadler, you can join too.
I can't remember if I mentioned it here or not, but even if I did, it begs repeating. I need footage of Dikembe Mutumbo talking to Yao Ming. I want Cookie Monster to do the narration. I will settle for footage of the Lopez twins talking to each other as a consolation.
Emmitt Smith is not allowed to comment on someone else not being smart.
Here's the plot line for the movie "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas":
"Eight year-old Bruno is the sheltered son of a Nazi officer whose promotion takes the family from their comfortable home in Berlin to a desolate area where the lonely boy finds nothing to do and no-one to play with. Crushed by boredom and compelled by curiosity, Bruno ignores his mother's repeated instructions not to explore the back garden and heads for the 'farm' he has seen in the near distance. There he meets Shmuel, a boy his own age who lives a parallel, alien existence on the other side of a barbed wire fence. Bruno's encounter with the boy in the striped pajamas leads him from innocence to a dawning awareness of the adult world around them as his meetings with Shmuel develop into a friendship with devastating consequences."
I think we found a contender for a movie with a more depressing ending than "The Green Mile." I don't care how many good reviews this gets and how many people tell me to go see it. As my Dad would say, there is no way I'm going to go out and spend money to depress myself for the rest of the day.
I still can't believe that game last night. Seriously, have you ever seen worse clock management in the last minute of a game? 30 seconds to snap a ball when you're just spiking it then running a ball to eliminate an extra down then running into your own line and falling down to end the game. Sorry, I'm almost over it.
Tim Lincecum should be the NL Cy Young winner. Put him on any other team with his numbers, he's 23-3, and there's no discussion necessary.
Please let the Dodgers get Manny. Please.
Jrue Holiday makes me happy too. I don't care if we're only getting him for his freshman year at UCLA, it's worth it. He's that good. He's a better prospect than Kevin Love or Russell Westbrook. For me, that's saying a lot because I loved both Love and Westbrook last year.
Quick, name a song on the non-rock radio that doesn't involve T-Pain, Akon, or Rihanna.
Arizona just jumped offsides again. Almost over that game. Not quite.
Texas Tech just scored another touchdown too! I'm almost talking myself into Texas Tech winning out and getting to the BCS Championship game. Oklahoma's defense leaves a little to be desired and Harrell and Crabtree deserve to share the Heisman. How great would a Texas Tech/Florida BCS Championship game be? We should all send thank you notes to Iowa for beating Penn State and making the championship game relevant. The BCS should send them flowers and chocolates too.
If you are a rec. league football coach, you need to calm down. Stop making your kids cry; and to the parents, stop yelling at officials. Why are the 10-year olds the most mature ones on the field on Saturdays?
The Lakers look nice. No further comment needed.
Can we stop the Titans/Giants discussion? The Giants lost to Cleveland by 3 touchdowns. Giants fans need to be okay with being ranked #2 for now until the Titans throw up a similar stinker. The Titans haven't looked bad in their losses. Wait, they haven't had any losses. As soon as the Titans get lit up by Brady Quinn's backup I'll put the Giants up in the #1 slot.
3 hours of tax class is an 8th Amendment violation.
To Shaun Hill: The shovel pass should be thrown to your team. Okay, I'm over it now.
Tiger Woods' saying that Barack Obama's victory was great and that his Dad would have cried is not news. Why was ESPN acting like he had just commented on China's human rights record or the crisis in the Congo?
If you can, catch a re-airing of the Arsenal-Manchester United game from this past weekend. Don't watch a re-airing of the Joe Calzaghe-Roy Jones Jr. debacle.
I'll be touring Men's Central Jail tomorrow morning and going to see Jeffrey Toobin speak with my Mom tomorrow night. I'm expecting an idea for a column from at least one of those trips. Until then, Happy Veterans Day!
